First Nations reach agreement with proponents of Victoria International Marina <
The Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations have reached an agreement with the proponents of the Victoria International Marina.
"We have gotten to a point where we recognize their rights and we have entered into a business agreement that satisfactorily deals with the recognition of their rights as a First Nations people that have a significant history on Victoria Harbour."
That's Vice President of the WAM Development Group Lachlan MacLean who was a guest on CFAX 1070 with Adam Stirling.
MacLean says there will be employment opportunities for First Nations at the Marina "and that may include actually working with the marina component on the docks, but more so I think there will be more opportunity in working with future tenants of the marina buildings, like the coffee shop and restaurant and other marine tenancies and working together with the Chiefs to try and find opportunities for training and employment for their people."
MacLean says consultation with First Nations is a requirement for the Provincial Crown Lease application process as well as the Federal environmental assessment process.
MacLean says they are currently waiting for word from the provincial government on the Crown Lease application, and are waiting on word from Transport Canada on their submission for a new federal navigable waters permit.
